Texans Planning to Use Arian Foster More as Receiver
The Houston Texans are already being wide open about how they plan to conduct things on offense in 2014. Per star running back Arian Foster, a huge part of the plan is going to be getting him the ball as much as possible.
That only seems natural.
Foster specifically cited getting the ball more as a receiver out of the backfield, as the Texans hope to take advantage of his soft hands and getting him out in space where he can best utilize his vision and athleticism.
After all, Foster has shown he’s at his best when he can make decisive cuts in the open field, as he posted some of his best numbers when he was highly involved in the passing game in 2010 and 2011.
It also could be a tactic to help veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick doesn’t have the biggest arm and isn’t the most accurate passer, so dumping the ball off to Foster should help with efficiency, as well as assist him in getting into a groove quicker in games.
Foster struggled out of the gates after missing extensive offseason time due to a back issue, and ended up playing just eight games in 2013 before going on injured reserve to have back surgery.
That disaster season, one in which the Texans won just two games, saw Foster’s receptions dip for the third consecutive season.
Under new head coach Bill O’Brien, the Texans are fully expected to be a much more creative offense, and getting Foster the ball more in any way possible is going to help keep defenses on their toes. Despite the back surgery, Foster will only be 28 years old when the season starts and is still Houston’s featured running back. He’s a real threat for another 300+ carry season and should approach 60 receptions in the new offense.
