Jon Beason Breaks Foot, Out 12 Weeks
The New York Giants just can’t catch a break at the linebacker position. After lucking into the talented Jon Beason in a trade last year, Big Blue has already been introduced to his negative side.
Per reports, Beason has sustained a broken foot that will require surgery and is expected to miss up to 12 weeks. More specifically, Beason actually tore a ligament and broke the “sesamoid bone” in his right foot.
This is the bad side of Jon Beason. New York initially acquired him in a trade last year with the Carolina Panthers, who had grown tired with his constant health issues. Once one of the premiere linebackers in the entire league, Beason fell out of favor in Carolina due to missing a whopping 27 games during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Beason ended up being a fantastic addition to a struggling Giants defense in 2013, however, as he came over and started from week six, on. Beason immediately made his presence known, racking up 12 tackles in his first start and going on to total 104 total tackles on the year.
A tackling machine in Carolina through his first four NFL seasons, Beason brought experience, leadership and strong fundamentals to the table in the trade and actually played so well that the G-Men decided to lock him up for the long-term.
Beason had just finished up a three-year deal with the team back in March, and just a few months later is already on the shelf again for the third time in the past four years.
With that said, Beason’s injury isn’t of the season-ending variety, and he should be able to make a full recovery in a decent amount of time. The 12-week time table isn’t ideal, but it should still have him missing only a handful of regular season games at the very worst. At best, he could be a shaky call leading into week one.
This hurts the defense from an outside perspective, but Beason already knows the defense and will otherwise be at full strength upon his return.
