David Wilson Fails to Gain Medical Clearance
The New York Giants lost running back David Wilson to a neck injury after just five games in 2013. They have yet to fully get him back.
Per reports, Wilson was still unable to gain medical clearance during a medical exam on Wednesday. Despite reportedly feeling healthy and well enough to take on the rigors of a 16-game NFL season, Wilson has been unable to be fully cleared and until he does, will not be able to suit up for the G-Men.
It’s disappointing news for an electrifying and versatile runner that was supposed to step into a bigger role in 2013, but failed to live up to expectations. Ultimately, he failed to even stay healthy and enters 2014 as a major question mark.
The Giants have maintained all along that they are not banking on Wilson rescuing their rushing attack like they did a year ago. That approach was loud and clear with free agent signings of Rashad Jennings and Peyton Hillis, while the team also drafted Boston College product, Andre Williams.
To put it bluntly, Wilson is being regarded as “a bonus” for the Giants right now, as relying heavily on anyone (let alone a running back) with a neck condition is a risky move.
The newly signed Jennings proved last year that he still had some juice in his legs and is expected to take over as New York’s lead back. Williams is a downhill power back that could end up complementing Jennings perfectly. Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox will likely battle it out for the final running back spot.
While the Giants are prepared for the worst in regards to Wilson and his availability, they’ll obviously welcome him and his elite versatility back with open arms. Due to his neck issue, however, it would be understandable if the Giants played it safe and didn’t ask a lot out of Wilson at first. If he’s cleared to play, he’ll likely just serve a change of pace role and help out on return duty until it’s obvious he can handle a bigger load while staying healthy.
