Top 10 Running Backs for Season-Long Fantasy Drafts

In this article we will count down the 10 best running back options in season-long fantasy leagues. In parentheses is the range of overall draft positions we recommend taking a given player.

1. Lesean McCoy, Eagles (Pick 1 – 5)

McCoy, along with Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, and Marshawn Lynch, is one of the 4 best RBs in the league. Unlike those three other RBs, McCoy has the benefit of running behind the best offensive line in the NFL. He led the league in rushing last year, and at 25 years old, he has plenty of tread left of the tires. McCoy has all the qualifications to justify being the first overall selection in any fantasy draft.

2. Adrian Peterson, Vikings (Pick 1 – 5)

Here is another elite running back playing behind an excellent run-blocking line. The only thing working against Peterson is his age: at 29, he is nearing the end of his prime, and a dip in production, as well as more injuries, should soon be expected.

3. Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks (Pick 1 – 5)

Beastmode, Skittles, whatever people want to call Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks can thank him nearly as much as their stellar defense for their Superbowl-winning season last year. But this o-line is average at best, so Lynch won’t get much support there. He will benefit from the run-first style of offense Seattle uses, which is rare in the NFL these days.

4. Jamaal Charles, Chiefs (Pick 1 – 5)

I would actually put Charles above Lynch in terms of overall talent. However, the o-line for Kansas City is downright ugly. Last year, the Chiefs seemed to have surplus of linemen with mauler Geoff Schwartz and the athletic Jon Asamoah fighting for a starting spot.

With both of those able guards now on other teams, there are no good options to step up in their place. Eric Fisher looks to be a downgrade from Branden Albert at left tackle, as well. Despite what should be terrible line play, Charles’ 200+ overall yards and 5 TD performance in one game at Oakland last year showed what he is capable of.

5. Matt Forte, Bears (Pick 5 – 10)

The presence of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery will force defenses to focus on the passing game and not key in on the run. Forte is also an excellent pass-catcher, so he is especially valuable in PPR leagues.

6. Demarco Murray, Cowboys (Pick 10 – 20)

Like Forte, Murray is often utilized as a receiver and he is especially valuable in PPR leagues. He should thrive in his role as Romo’s release valve.

7. Eddie Lacy, Packers (Pick 10 – 20)

Rather than experiencing a sophomore slump, I believe Lacy is poised to improve on his excellent rookie campaign. With Rodgers, Nelson, and Cobb patched up defenses will focus on the passing game, which should open things up nicely for Lacy.

8. Giovanni Bernard, Bengals (Pick 20 – 30)

Bernard was electric nearly every time he touched the ball in 2013, and the Bengals will look to expand his role on their offense and get him the ball often this season.

9. Le’Veon Bell, Steelers (Pick 20 – 30)

Bell showed promise his rookie year, but the offseason additions of LeGarrette Blount and Dri Archer may bite into his carries.

10. Reggie Bush, Lions (Pick 20 – 30)

Bush is in a good situation as the premier back in a high-powered offense. Especially valuable in PPR leagues. If Joique Bell wasn’t there to steal away a good share of carries, Bush would be higher on this list.
