Draft Grade: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Notable Picks

7th Overall: WR Mikes Evans (Texas A&M)

The Buccaneers let go of the underachieving Mike Williams this offseason and improved at the WR2 position with the addition of Mike Evans. Johnny Manziel has a lot of talent but he can thank Evans for much of his production. Many of Manziel’s throws that would have been incomplete were turned into receptions and often touchdowns by Evans. Now paired with the excellent Vincent Jackson, opposing secondaries will have to pick their poison when facing Tampa Bay.

38th Overall: TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins (Washington)

The Buccaneers added a lot of defensive pieces in free agency, so it makes sense they turned the focus to offense in the draft. Seferian-Jenkins provides the Bucs with another tall (6’6”) red zone target, but his blocking leaves a lot to be desired.

69TH Overall: HB Charlie Sims (West Virginia)

The Buccaneers already have a backfield crowded with talent (Doug Martin, Mike James, and Bobby Rainey) so why spend a 3rd round pick on another halfback when there are bigger needs to address? Sims is talented, but there is no way he starts over Martin, and he might even play third string behind James.

185th Overall: WR Robert Herron (Wyoming)

The Buccaneers add yet another pass-catcher here. Herron was a great value pick in the sixth round. He should be able to take the reins from Chris Owusu and immediately get the majority of snaps at slot receiver for the Bucs.

Final Grade: B

Starting quarterback Josh McCown is used to having elite offensive weapons to throw to, playing with wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery and running back Matt Forte in Chicago. Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans are no Marshall and Jeffery, but they are an above average duo of receivers who will make things easier for McCown.
