Thursday Night Recap: Dolphins vs Bills
This week’s Thursday night game was a rare one in the modern era of high-powered passing attacks and rule changes that allow wide receivers great cushions of open space lest the defensive back be penalized.
Yes, this was a matchup between two good old-fashioned defensive powerhouses. Both the Dolphins and the Bills have much better defenses than they do offenses, particularly the defensive lines of both teams, led by former first overall pick defensive end Mario Williams for the Bills and undrafted player turned star defensive end Cameron Wake.
Going into halftime the score proved this point of these division rivals being more about defense than offense, with a baseball or soccer-esque low score of Bills 6, Dolphins 3.
After halftime, Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill got rolling. In the third quarter Tannehill marched his team 80 yards down the field for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter he took his team 63 yards for another touchdown. Those 2 touchdowns turned out the be the only 2 touchdowns of the game, as Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes was able to limit the Bills most explosive offensive weapon, rookie sensation Sammy Watkins, to just 3 receptions for 32 yards and no touchdowns. The Dolphins won by a final score of 22 – 9.
With a record of 6 – 4 the Dolphins are now in second place in the AFC East, a game behind division leader the New England Patriots. The Patriots face a tough Indianapolis Colts team on Sunday night, and if the Pats lose, the Dolphins will have a solid shot at taking the division title and thus a spot in the playoffs this year.
